School Policies

Attendance
Regular school attendance is extremely important. Absences due to illness, medical/dental appointments, or a death in the immediate family are legally excusable absences; no other absences can be excused. When your child is absent, you need to telephone the office and/or send a note to school explaining the reason for the absence. If we do not receive a call or note, we will be phoning you directly.

Tardies
Tardies are one of our biggest concerns. Chronic or frequent tardiness is not only disruptive to your child’s education; but that of everyone else in the room. Students are considered tardy for school once the teacher has submitted the daily attendance or after roll has been taken. Student attendance and adherence to school hours are the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian. Please make sure your child/children has sufficient time to prepare for school and arrive in their classroom by 8:20 a.m. each day. All students that arrive after 8:20 a.m. must go to the office with a parent/guardian or with a note explaining why they are late.

Playground Supervision
Our Cafeteria opens at 7:45 a.m. for breakfast, and supervision is provided on the playground from 7:45 – 8:20 a.m. Your child should not arrive at school before 7:45 a.m. Students should be picked up promptly at dismissal time since there is no after school supervision on the playground. Students may not stay and play on the school grounds after school unless they are with an adult supervisor. Once they reach home, they are under parent supervision even if they return to the school grounds to play.

Release of Children to Adults
By law, we cannot release a child to anyone who is not listed on the emergency form. Be sure this form is filled out, signed, and returned to school prior to finding out your child’s class placement. Also, please be sure to let us know of any changes that occur during the school year. Please sign out in the school office if you need to take your child off campus before dismissal time.

Off Campus Visitors
In order to protect our students, our campus is closed. All visitors must check in with the office when visiting the school. Permission to visit may be denied by the principal. Students from other schools may not visit our campus during school hours without a legitimate purpose and permission from the principal. School gates will be closed daily during school hours. Anyone arriving after 8:30 a.m. must enter campus through the front entrance.

Anti-Bullying/Discrimination
We do not tolerate bullying or discrimination in any form at Bay View Elementary. All students are asked to report acts of bullying or harassment to an adult. Santa Cruz City Schools have adopted a policy that prohibits discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying. You can find the complete policy at http://www.gamutonline.net/district/santacruzcity/DisplayPolicy/684002/

Lost and Found
Lost articles of clothing will be stored in the cafeteria, and periodically put out on the railing. Please write your child’s name on all jackets and other items. Other lost articles may be stored in the office. All unclaimed items are donated to charity several times a year.

Wellness Policy - Lunch, Snacks and Birthdays
The educational mission of the Santa Cruz City School District includes improving the health and wellness in our community by teaching students to establish and maintain lifelong healthy eating and physical activity habits. To that end, we ask that parents support our effort by NOT bringing cake, cupcakes, candy, ice cream, or soda for lunches, birthday or classroom celebrations. Good alternatives include fresh fruit, vegetables, healthy crackers, and fruit juice. Please check with your child’s teacher for other healthy snack ideas.

Money, Toys and Cell Phones at School
Children should never bring large sums of money to school. Similarly, children should not bring expensive toys or video games to school. We cannot be responsible for personal items. While we recognize that some students may need cell phones to connect with parents after school, cell phones must be turned off and put away during school hours, and may not be used during the school day.

Bay View is a Tobacco Free School!
Please read the following policies regarding tobacco use at Bay View.
STUDENTS
The Governing Board recognizes the serious health risks presented by tobacco use and desires to ensure that, through adoption of consistent policies, district students are made aware of those risks and, to the extent possible, protected from them. Students shall not possess, smoke, or use tobacco or any product containing tobacco or nicotine while on campus, while attending school-sponsored activities, or while under the supervision and control of district employees. Prohibited products include, but are not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, miniature cigars, clove cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, snuff, chew packets, and betel. (Education Code48900,48901) Students' possession or use of electronic cigarettes, electronic hookahs, and other vapor-emitting devices, with or without nicotine content, that mimic the use of tobacco products is also prohibited. Students in possession of tobacco or tobacco products or electronic cigarettes will be referred for disciplinary action and will also be referred to Seven Challenges or other smoking cessation programs available.

STAFF
The Governing Board recognizes that smoking and other uses of tobacco and nicotine products constitute a serious public health hazard and are inconsistent with district goals to provide a healthy environment for students and staff. The Board prohibits the use of tobacco products at any time in district-owned or leased buildings, on district property, and in district vehicles. This prohibition applies to all employees, students, and visitors at any school-sponsored instructional program, activity, or athletic event held on or off district property. Any written joint use agreement governing community use of district facilities or grounds shall include notice of the district's tobacco-free schools policy and consequences for violations of the policy. The products prohibited include any product containing tobacco or nicotine, including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, miniature cigars, smokeless tobacco, snuff, chew, clove cigarettes, betel, electronic cigarettes, electronic hookahs, and other vapor-emitting devices, with or without nicotine content, that mimic the use of tobacco products.
