Walk to Read
Walk to Read is a program that allows students to get specialized reading instruction at their own level. Students in grades 1-5 are placed into reading groups taught by classroom teachers and support staff. Under the direction of Charlene Oatey, our reading coordinator, children receive reading instruction at their level four days a week. This program has been very successful at improving our students' levels of reading and comprehension.
We are implementing the new Common Core State Standards in mathematics, with its focus on depth of understanding and concept development. Multiple approaches and problem-solving strategies are of utmost importance developing numeracy.
Next generation science standards are being implemented in the classroom curriculum. Our Science program is enhanced by Life Lab at all grade levels, the Watershed curriculum at fourth grade, and Outdoor Science School at fifth grade.
Our universal social skills curriculum, Second Step, is taught in all classes K-5. Students develop pro-social skills such as empathy, listening, and emotional regulation.
